POSITION DUTIES

A Registered Nurse Supervisor Perkins is the supervisory level of work in the provision of directing nursing care at Clifton T. Perkins in a ward on a twenty-four-hour basis or for several wards during one shift. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Registered Nurses and other assigned licensed and non-licensed nursing care staff. Employees in this classification may be scheduled to work in the Nursing staffing office or Unit/ward. Requires weekend coverage, holiday coverage and subject to essential staffing requirements. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Registered Nurse Manager Perkins, Assistant Director of Nursing Perkins or Director of Nursing Perkins. Employees are assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include weekends and holidays. Employees are subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages. The work is performed at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center where care is provided to mentally ill patients who have been judged not criminally responsible for committing felonies, and to those who are difficult to manage in a less secure setting and who have been deemed dangerous to themselves or others. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease. Employees may be required to lift patients or apply restraints. The work may require long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching.

The Registered Nurse Supervisor Perkins is differentiated from the Registered Nurse Charge Perkins in that the Registered Nurse Supervisor Perkins is responsible for 24 hour supervision of a unit or is a shift supervisor for several wards and supervises the Registered Nurse Charge Perkins, while the Registered Nurse Charge Perkins who is responsible for one unit during an assigned shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurses.

Experience: Three years of experience as a Registered Nurse to include one year in a supervisory, administrative or teaching capacity and two years in a psychiatric setting.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university for one year of the required psychiatric experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in Nursing or a health related field from an accredited college or university for the required psychiatric experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State of Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
