Introduction

This is a contractual, position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves in the Chesapeake Forest and Pocomoke State Forest projects as technical support in the areas of state forest management and state boundary line maintenance on lands owned by the Department, supporting the main goal of inspiring Marylanders to live in harmony with nature and to protect the Chesapeake Bay. This position is responsible for assisting with managing the Chesapeake Forest leased hunting program. The position performs complicated, semi-skilled work as assigned, and operates and maintains vehicles and equipment as necessary.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources Forest Service in Snow Hill is currently accepting applications for a Long-Term Contractual Conservation Aide. This position will provide maintenance to the Chesapeake Forest and Pocomoke State Forest lands. A major function of the position entails marking, posting, and brushing state property lines, installing gates on forest roads, removal of trash and other debris dumped on the property, mowing and brushing of roads, and maintenance on equipment that is used on state forest property. Work may also entail providing assistance on prescribed burns, assisting with the construction of forest trails, and the operation of heavy equipment (such as bulldozers, plows, and tractors) to cut grass, remove dead trees, and haul debris.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: One year of experience performing advanced, semi-skilled level of work in a State conservation agency.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience implementing and completing projects on forests, parks, or other conservation lands.  
  • Current possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred for this position but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants may be required to possess a valid Class B State of Maryland Motor Vehicle License prior to appointment to positions in this classification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Candidates must be willing to travel and be available in any part of the State.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
