POSITION DUTIES

Patuxent Institution is a maximum-security state prison designed to provide remediation programs and services to male and female incarcerated individuals based upon current best practices. The Psychologist Correctional position is the doctorate, licensed level of professional work. The main purpose of this position is to provide direct psychological services to incarcerated individuals in one or more programs. 

Such services may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts risk assessments, diagnostic assessments, and other types of psychological assessments as assigned
  • Provides direct psychotherapeutic services to incarcerated individuals to include cognitive-behavioral group psychotherapy, individual therapy, and crisis intervention
  • May engage in research-related activities, supervision and training of unlicensed members of the psychology staff, and administrative supervision of other professional and clerical employees

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.


Education: A Doctorate degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university accepted by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Experience: Two years of experience rendering psychological services or engaged in psychological research.


Notes: 

1. Licensure by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists can be substituted for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Clinical Psychology classifications or Psychology specialty codes in the Psychology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for this classification must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists prior to permanent appointment to a position.  Applicants who do not have a license may also apply before receipt of the required license but the application will be designated in pending status by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).  When the license has been obtained, submit a copy of the license to DBM to remove the pending status from the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this classification, prior to probationary appointment, must meet all selection standards as set forth in the Code of Maryland Regulations for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Candidates who receive a probationary appointment must satisfactorily complete a prescribed training program prior to permanent appointment. Selection standards of the Correctional Training Commission may be obtained from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

· Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
· Annual Leave - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
· Sick Leave - fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year
