Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

Responsible for conducting habitat management projects, maintenance/repair of facilities/equipment, coordination of public use and wildlife surveys on Wildlife Management Areas, other DNR owned or controlled properties and certain private properties in the Region for the purpose of wildlife conservation/protection and public recreation. The employee also assists with the management of the public shooting range at Myrtle Grove WMA.

This position requires knowledge of land management practices, farming equipment maintenance/repair/use, basic wildlife species identification, vehicle maintenance/repair/use, and the application of standard wildlife management techniques. 

The position is also responsible for frequent interaction with the public to inform them of public land opportunities, clarify shooting range protocols, resolve routine wildlife problems and direct them to appropriate contacts within WHS and other agencies.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking interested candidates for a Natural Resources Technician III position at Myrtle Grove WMA located in La Plata, MD. This is semi-professional work related to managing wildlife resources, habitat and public recreation on public and private lands. This position will assist with land management activities throughout the Southern Region (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s, and Saint Mary’s counties). Responsibilities will include conducting a variety of land, habitat and facilities management activities on a network of Wildlife Management Areas and other managed hunting areas throughout the region. Other job duties will include assisting with wildlife surveys, data collection, timely completion of administrative paperwork, and assisting with nuisance wildlife situations.

Work activities may involve use of firearms, immobilization equipment, animal restraint devices, pesticide application equipment, participation in prescribed burning projects, heavy lifting, use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs/UTVs, agricultural/heavy equipment, and boats. The incumbent will be subject to periodic adverse working conditions (hot / cold temperatures, rain / snow / ice, insects, mud, smoke, direct contact with wildlife, etc.).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience, two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating farming or landscape equipment such as mowers, skid loaders, tractors, dozers, etc.
  • Commercial Class A or B driver’s license.
  • Customer service experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
