Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire prevention and fire inspection in order to preserve life and protect property from fire and other emergency conditions.

POSITION DUTIES

Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing structures by identifying the occupancy classification, computing the allowable occupant load, inspecting the means of egress elements, verifying the type of construction for an addition or remodeling project to ensure the structures meet local and State laws. 

 

Conducts fire safety inspections of facilities that require licenses by other State agencies, such as health care, public and private schools, correctional facilities, day camps and migrant camps to ensure fire prevention measures are in place prior to issuing a license.

 

Conducts fire safety inspections of places of public assembly, such as bars and restaurants, exhibition halls, commercial and mercantile buildings, hotel and motels to ensure public Safety. Inspect and witness licensed public fireworks displays to ensure public safety.

 

Prepares appropriate correspondence to communicate observations of fire code violations so that the report accurately reflects the findings of the inspection in accordance with applicable codes and standards. 

 

Maintains records, files and related documents of inspections in accordance with record-keeping policies and procedures. 

 

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience inspecting buildings and other places of public assembly for compliance with fire prevention and safety laws, codes and regulations on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Firefighter classifications or Firefighter specialty codes in the fire inspection field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience performing fire safety inspections in buildings with multiple uses.

2. Fire Safety Inspector certification


LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties, which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area of the State.

2. Candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background investigation before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction record may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

3. Employees in this classification must successfully meet the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1031) for Fire Safety Inspector I prior to completion of the probationary period.

4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employees and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
