Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government.  The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Main Purpose of Job

OAG is seeking applicants for the position of Docket Clerk /Legal Secretary within the Criminal Appeals Division. The Criminal Appeals Division represents the State of Maryland in all appellate litigation directly or indirectly challenging a judgment of criminal conviction entered in the State’s trial courts.  

POSITION DUTIES

The successful applicant will provide administrative support to the Division by: (1) receiving and internally docketing incoming electronic court filings and paper mail; (2) entering data into the Division’s case management system; (3) contacting opposing counsel to obtain or transmit missing case materials; (4) preparing cases for assignment and distribution to attorneys; (5) maintaining calendars and other internal resource documents; and (5) answering and screening telephone calls for the Division as needed. The successful candidate also may assist in preparing appellate briefs for electronic filing and handle other office administrative duties as needed. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience as a legal secretary to include keyboarding legal briefs, pleadings, affidavits, subpoenas and other legal documents; maintaining case files, schedules and logs and verifying legal citations and references.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional secretarial or other clerical experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Legalman classifications or Paralegal specialty codes in the administrative support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs and PDF conversion software.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate shall possess:

1. At least three years of experience as a legal assistant, legal secretary, court docketing clerk, or other role providing administrative support to attorneys in litigation.
2.     Legal support experience in criminal or appellate litigation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification must demonstrate ability to keyboard at a minimum speed of forty words per minute.

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list for at least one year.  Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.
