Introduction

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) serves as one of the largest revenue sources for the State of Maryland, supporting important state programs and services including education, public health and safety, human resources and the environment. In addition to generating revenue from the sale of lottery products, the MLGCA is also responsible for the oversight of the state’s casino gaming program, providing direction and guidance to its casino partners on financial, security, regulatory and licensing procedures for the facilities. The Agency also regulates Sports Wagering, Daily Fantasy Sports and Electronic Bingo, as well as Instant Ticket Lottery Machines, which are located at almost 90 Veteran’s posts. Gaming in Maryland is a dynamic and growing business that operates around the clock, 365 days of the year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Administrative Specialist is responsible for providing administrative support and customer assistance while staffing the Maryland Lottery and Gaming’s front desk. This includes, but is not limited to, answering phone calls, greeting guests and responding to inquiries from the public. This individual will represent the Lottery at events throughout the state. This position will also assist the Communications Division’s Budget, Procurement and Inventory Officer.

POSITION DUTIES

Communications Division Support

  • Assists with front desk duties including answering incoming calls, greeting guests, and providing information in a professional manner.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public by gathering general Maryland Lottery and Gaming information, drawings game winning numbers, product and promotion details.  
  • Works Lottery Events: occasionally serving as a Lottery ambassador at events throughout the state along with other Communications team members to talk with the public, answer questions, assist with set-up and break-down and other on-site activities as needed.
  • Attends departmental and agency meetings as needed.
  • Completes other duties and special assignments as needed.
  • Help plan and prepare for internal and agency wide activities.

 

Procurement and Inventory

Assists and serves as back-up to the Communications Division’s Budget, Procurement and Inventory Officer to ensure that the Division is able to:
  • Procure, track and evaluate expenditures on a continual basis. This includes: maintaining spreadsheets to track thousands of promotional items for statewide distribution.
Assist with monthly budget status reports, procurement and inventory data, procurement requests and tracking expenditures for commodities and services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six months of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience answering calls and greeting guest.

- Ability to interact with the public.

- Experience multitasking.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidate may be responsible for providing their own transportation as needed to access meetings, remote locations, and job destinations as assigned.
