Introduction

As part of the Maryland State Department of Education, the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) provides services to assist students with disabilities prepare for the work world, vocational rehabilitation services to assist adults with significant disabilities who are seeking to enter or reenter the workforce, and the adjudication of Social Security disability claims for the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position will provide administrative support to applicants with disabilities, claimants, representatives, Social Security Administration offices, and other agencies requesting information from the Maryland Disability Determination Services (DDS).

Position Duties Include:
  • Answers status inquiries from disability applicants or claimants; attorney representatives; Social Security Administration (SSA) Field and District Offices.
  • Provide and document requested responses and others performing data analysis of the information contained within the SSA case processing system.
  • Following HIPPA Laws/Privacy Act, provide accurate detailed information concerning caller needs.
  • Access National Case Processing System and document conversation from the applicant, claimants or representative into the case within the National Case Processing System. 
  • Obtaining detailed information that provides the adjudicator updated information to take next adjudicative step.
  • May act on case note left by adjudicator to obtain needed information from claimant such as, but not limited to activities of daily living, updates of medical treatment and changes to conditions for which they are applying.
  • Monitors undirected medical evidence in the validation queue, review medical evidence and access SSA’s National Case Processing System to determine placement of evidence into the correct disability case.
  • Process status requests for SSA-approved attorney/authorized representatives and answers correspondence to appropriate person by phone or in writing to SSA secured email providers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six months of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with customer service. 
  • Experience working in a call center.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Job offers and access to Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) systems, data, information, and/or premises are contingent upon you passing the SSA suitability process. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials.
