Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor is accepting applications for the position of Administrative Specialist III. Administrative Specialist III is the advanced level of administrative work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position will be to provide administrative support in all areas to the licensing unit in the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. The duties will include fielding telephone calls; reviewing and processing applications, entering data into the computer system; assisting clients; answering questions related to the laws, regulations and policies governing the licensing and regulation of Contractors; preparing statistical reports; and other related duties as assigned.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist walk-in customers, telephone and e-mail inquiries from professional about the status of their licensing applications, their eligibility for licensing, and requirements of the laws and provide appropriate forms
  • Screen and process applications for licensure 
  • Review and release applications from Pending 
  • Review and enter applicant licensing data into the AS400 system

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Experience preparing reports and drafting written correspondence 

Professional written and oral communication skills

Experience reviewing and processing License Applications

Experience using the AS400 system

Experience with Microsoft Office programs, Excel and Word

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (LABOR/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to LABOR/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
