to a higher grade within the classification series, based on satisfactory work
performance. 

Progressive grade levels include:
Health Physicist I -  Grade 15 ($57,275.00-$92,108.00)
Health Physicist II - Grade 16 ($60,987.00-$98,313.00)

POSITION DUTIES


The Health Physicist Trainee is an entry level position.  The incumbent in this position will lean to conduct materials inspections, investigation and surveys necessary to enforce Maryland Regulations governing Radiation Protection and to protect public health and safety.  This position involves learning and assisting in radiological investigations, special projects, and team inspections at large facility. The incumbent in this position will also be required to participate and gain the required competency in many important technical roles in Calvert Cliffs and Peach Bottom nuclear power plant accident drills, on a 24/7 basis, to protect the health and safety of the citizens of the State of Maryland. The incumbent in this position will occasionally work after hours and on-call 24/7 for Radiological Emergencies and occasional overnight travel and stay required.

The incumbent will perform work which may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings during some industrial radioactive material inspections. The incumbent will perform work involving potential radiation exposure during routine inspections and emergency responses. The incumbent will also be required to climb ladders, collect radioactive samples for laboratory analysis and drive up to 200 miles to and from inspection sites. During site inspections protective equipment is required and may include goggles, gloves, mask, hard hat, safety shoes and protective clothing to prevent radioactive material contamination. 

The incumbent in this position will be required to drive a State vehicle.  If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Science, or Physics;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Experience generating database reports;
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks;
  • Willingness to work as a team member;
  • Experience providing service to customers in a professional setting which must have included personal interaction with members of the general public or other customers.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).

ANNUAL LEAVE - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year.

SICK LEAVE – fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year.

PARENTAL LEAVE – up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

HOLIDAYS – State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year.
