Main Purpose of Job

To apply and approve professional fire protection engineering principles and practices to ensure compliance with fire laws included in the Maryland Public Safety Article and requirements of the State Fire Prevention Code as applicable to design, construction, and use of new and existing buildings and processes from a life safety and property protection standpoint; serve as a technical code enforcement resource at the regional level to the staff of the agency; implement and coordinate code requirements with local fire and building officials and numerous state agencies; provide appropriate professional level of fire protection engineering services as directed by the Chief Fire Protection Engineer; provide code interpretation and fire protection engineering assistance to architects, engineers and other design professionals consistent with agency policies.

POSITION DUTIES

• Performs detailed technical review and evaluation of a broad scope and complexity of preliminary design and construction documents, including plans and specifications of all types of new construction projects and hazardous industrial processes for agency approval and compliance with applicable State fire laws, regulations and related referenced codes and standards in accordance with guidelines and priorities established by the State Fire Marshal and Chief Fire Protection Engineer.

• Performs critical review of various fire protection system “shop drawings” prepared by fire protection sub-contractors. Such Systems include automatic sprinkler; detection and alarm; standpipe; smoke control; emergency lighting and control, and other highly specialized fire protection systems. Engineering calculations are made to verify and determine adequacy of design and performance of the system in accordance with required standards and good engineering practice.


• Confers with and provides professional fire protection engineering advice, guidance and direction to architects, engineers, and other design professionals on acceptable methods and materials of achieving compliance with fire protection criteria of fire and building codes. Approval is given to proper methods and designs impacting on the architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural aspects of construction, equipment and processes from a fire protection engineering standpoint.

• Researches, analyzes, interprets and applies code criteria and standards


• Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.

                                                OR

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Engineering classifications or Engineering specialty codes in the fire protection engineering field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education. 

 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications:

1. Professional memberships - Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA, International Code Council/Building Outreach (ICC)

2. Fire service experience - 2 years

3. Academic Honor Societies - Tau Beta Pi, Salamander

4. Code Development Committee membership - NFPA, ICC

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties, which will require the candidates to be examined by a Physician. After an offer of employment, candidates for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties in Baltimore; however, the work assignments may involve travel throughout the State.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employees and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits
