Introduction
The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the
administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System). The
System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees
within the State of Maryland. The System is composed of twelve (12) separate
retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has
over 397,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are
actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a
monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer
actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a
future date.
The Agency is recruiting to fill an Administrative Officer
III position for the Disability Team in the Special Projects Unit.
This position is not telework eligible.

Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
This position requires someone to have or develop an
excellent knowledge of medical terminology as related to the evaluation of
disability retirement claims. This position is expected to develop a strong
understanding of the laws and regulations that apply to the processing of
disability claims, and have outstanding critical thinking, attention to detail
and organization skills.
This position works as part of a small team of professional employees
within the Special Projects Unit but requires the exercise of independent
judgement. The work environment is fast-paced and interesting with deadlines
associated with the timely processing of disability retirement claims.
Specific duties include:

Establishes and maintains complete files on all disability retirement
claims at various stages of the review process.

Analyzes and organizes each claim for proper medical and administrative
documentation.

Provides a summary of critical information to the attorneys handling
claims.
·
Completes follow up actions recommended by the attorneys
related to the collection of additional information and/or
organization/presentation of the claim file.
·
Communicate with parties (claimants, attorneys, doctors,
and/or employers) to gather needed information.
·
Schedules claims for review by one of the Retirement
Agency’s medical board doctors.
·
Prepares claim appeals for transmittal to the Office of
Administrative Hearings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
