Work that matters.  The Digital Media Specialist will serve as the "in-house reporter" for the Department, shooting videos, taking photos and producing compelling content to share with the public to meet goals set out my campaigns with the Department's Office of Public Affairs (OPA) and by divisions and programs at the Department, which range from home-ownership, neighborhood revitalization, energy efficiency, affordable housing, righting the wrongs of the past, homeless solutions, and policy development.  This position will lead on implementing OPA's social media strategy, as well as monitoring social platforms and media outlets for topics relating to the housing and community development industries.

The candidate will be joining the dynamic OPA team made up of 16 Communicators, Graphic Designers, marketing leaders, web user experience specialists and outreach team members.  As part of the communications team in OPA, the candidate will be responsible for increasing the Department's digital presence and online engagement.  The position also will assist with public relations activities such as talking points and event materials, when needed.

LOCATION OF POSITION

7800 Harkins Road Lanham, MD 20706.

The Department of Housing and Community Development Headquarters is located in Prince George's County across from the New Carrollton Metro stop.

POSITION DUTIES

The Digital Media Specialist produces engaging social media and digital content (including videos, photos, social media graphics, blog posts) following strategies and guidance set out by the Office of Public Affairs. This position will be the primary storyteller for the agency, ensuring the Department utilizes creative channels to reach its intended audiences and promote the agency’s mission and successes. This position coordinates social media posts and content across programs and within the Office of Public Affairs and also serves as a photographer/videographer for press events, working with the Deputy Director of Communications to also process photos and videos from the field. The position also has communications responsibilities including coordinating the internal and external newsletters, as well as assisting with briefings, talking points and staffing the executive team when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with digital content production and processing.
  • Experience with coordinating communications digital products, such as social media and email newsletters.
  • Experience with traditional media (tv, newspaper, website) and monitoring media outlets.
  • Experience with developing and implementing social media content strategies.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere and supporting public relation activities, such as drafting talking points, event materials, and press releases.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
