Introduction

Maryland State Retirement Agency (“Agency”) is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit pension plan covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System has over 400,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are actively employed and enrolled, 170,000 payees who receive a monthly retirement benefit payment, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but who have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date. The agency is seeking to fill a Retirement Seminar Coordinator position within its Administration Division Member Services Unit.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Retirement Seminar Coordinator is to be the program coordinator and facilitator for retirement planning seminars and webinars hosted by the Maryland State Retirement Agency. The retirement planning seminars and webinars may be full day, or half-day sessions, or micro-sessions on specific topics about State retirement pension benefits, other retirement savings, estate and financial planning, Social Security benefits and other retirement considerations. Sessions are open to members, spouses of members and former members of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.

As a Retirement Seminar Coordinator, the employee would be responsible for multiple duties, including but not limited to creating a seminar and webinar training schedule, securing event space for seminars across the state of Maryland, traveling to seminar locations and serving as facilitator. Additionally, the employee would be responsible for managing the webinar registration portal for webinars, moderating webinar questions, as well as addressing general questions from registrants, preparing handouts and analyzing survey data for results. 

The employee in this role is required to travel to off-site locations to serve as the Agency’s representative and facilitator for Pre-Retirement Seminars, first, to represent the Agency at conferences (e.g., Maryland State Educators’ Association, etc.), and to represent the Agency when an employer requests that an employee attend ad hoc meetings (e.g., decision to join the System, decision to transfer plans among the System, decision to accept an early retirement incentive, etc.) to answer questions raised by the employer’s employees. 

The Retirement Seminar Coordinator must be able to provide their own transportation if a state car is not available. Reimbursement follows the state mileage and/or expense policy. There is no reimbursement for a rental car. The ability and willingness to travel to locations throughout the entire State of Maryland is required, including instances of overnight stays.

POSITION DUTIES

Coordinate and facilitate Agency-led retirement seminars at off-site presentations, seminars, conventions, ad hoc meetings and webinars.

Demonstrates the ability to independently and correctly advise program participants and answer their questions regarding the pension benefit. 

Demonstrates the ability to work independently in planning and facilitating seminars. ​

Demonstrates the ability to independently complete special assignments assigned by supervisors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A bachelor's degree with a concentration in business administration.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Excel at the intermediate/advanced level (e.g. using pivot tables, linking worksheets, developing formulas, etc.). 
• At least two years of experience with program management. 
• At least two years of experience in customer service.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
