The Intelligence & Investigative Division's Watch Center operates on-site 24 hours per day/7 days per week. This classification/position is not telework-eligible. Therefore, employees will report to the office work-site location listed in this job announcement.

POSITION DUTIES

A Police Communications Operator I learns to communicate work in a law enforcement operation. Employees in this classification provide services to law enforcement and other authorized agencies through of computer terminals and multi-channel police radio equipment.

  • Monitors the violation status of incarcerated individual on the Central Home Detention Program using Global Positioning System. 
  • Investigates all violations utilizing mapping tab, and conducts follow-up via telephone. 
  • Reports all discrepancies to the Home Detention Duty Officer by submitting a matter of record. 
  • Inputs incarcerated individuals personal and schedule data into the monitoring system. 
  • Informs Incarcerated Individuals of scheduled leave out/reporting times, and rules of the program. 
  • Records serious incidents into the Record Management System (RMS) from correctional facilities and the public.
  • Determines the call/activity type and dispatches detectives to the scene. 
  • Maintains radio contact with personnel in the field conducting official business.  
  • Records communications on logs to ensure communications are in accordance with F.C.C regulations and police practice.
  • Sends email notification tips to appropriate personnel for Secretary’s Tip Line.  
  • Responds to state to state HIT confirmation request for outstanding fugitive warrants. 
  • Responds to Interstate Offender Compact cases utilizing ICOTS database.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Operations Specialist classifications or Signal Corps, Cyberspace Support, or Communications specialty codes in the communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred, not required:
  1. Experience managing multiple lines of high-volume calls and recording the information in writing.
  2. Experience as an emergency or communications dispatcher (such as Maryland's, 911, 411, or 311).

This position is limited to current Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) employees only.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for this classification may be subject to an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

The assessment is designed to measure the candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this job classification. Only candidates selected for an interview will be required to complete the assessment.

· Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
