This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
This position serves the Garrett Project as paraprofessional and/or technical support in the
areas of forest management, wildlife management, forest protection, urban and community
forestry, law enforcement, information and education services, wildland fire control on
private lands or lands owned by the State, and local governments supporting the main goal of
inspiring Marylanders to live in harmony with nature and to protect the Chesapeake Bay.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resource Technician I position located in Garrett County, Maryland. The technician will be stationed in the Garrett Project field office in Oakland, MD. Services required will be performed on private lands or lands owned by the State and local governments in the areas of forest management, forest data collection, tree planting, wildlife management, forest protection, wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and urban and community forestry. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, leaf blowers, tractors, ATV’s, and other heavy equipment. Applicants must be willing and available to work evening sand/or weekends for wildland fire suppression response. The position is full-time, 40 hours/week. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants not using a substitution to meet the minimum qualifications, must have one year of training or experience in forest tree identification and one year of training or experience in forest data collection and analysis. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of an Associates Degree in Forest Technology.
- Training and experience in GIS use.
- Training and experience in wildland fire suppression and control.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Persons appointed to this classification may be subject to assignment in any county of the State.
- Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.
