Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services, is currently accepting
applications for a part-time Seasonal Contractual Natural Resource Technician I. This position will serve as a creel clerk for the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division, Western Region II Office in Frederick County. This position will also perform additional creel survey work on the Lower Savage River in Garrett County MD and assist with seasonal fisheries sampling and monitoring. The primary duties of the position will be to conduct angler interviews on the upper Potomac River in Frederick and Washington counties and on the Lower Savage River in Garrett County. Additional duties include, but may not be limited to; assisting with biological field surveys, fish stocking, and facility/equipment maintenance. The nature of the p
osition requires work to be conducted independently and will include early morning/late evening/weekend hours.
The position is seasonal contractual and no paid benefits will be provided
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries experience, experience conducting angler creel surveys, and experience in the identification and/or management of freshwater gamefish species specific to western Maryland or surrounding area.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
