Introduction

Under the direction of the Maryland State Treasurer’s Office, Maryland ABLE provides people with disabilities an opportunity to save and invest their money without jeopardizing means tested benefits. The Program is responsible for educating people with disabilities, their families, and other stakeholders in the disability community about the eligibility criteria, enrollment, and account management process for Maryland ABLE accounts. The ABLE Program participates in disability-related outreach including virtual and on-site presentations to advocacy groups, school systems, service providers and outreach at conferences, expos, resource fairs and other forms of interpersonal contact to market the Maryland ABLE Program to the disability community.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as an ambassador to promote the ABLE program throughout central Maryland including the following counties: Baltimore, Baltimore County, Cecil, Howard, Harford, Northern Anne Arundel, and Eastern Carroll County. The incumbent is responsible for travel arrangements to the listed counties based on outreach events.

 

Within these counties, this position will serve as the ambassador for the ABLE program by promoting all ABLE activities. This position will conduct public relations activities for Maryland ABLE such participation at assigned conferences, expos, and community fairs; and will provide clear and concise ABLE presentations for disability advocacy groups, school systems, and service provider agencies. This position will distribute informational or promotional ABLE materials in accordance with Maryland ABLE.

 

This is a contractual, part-time position limited to 200 hours per year within the State Treasurer’s Office. The incumbent will receive the schedule for conferences, and outreach activities in advance. Hours will vary depending on the set activities per month. The incumbent will be responsible for travel arrangements to the assigned location from their home address. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Six years of experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related experience in publicity or promotional work.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester credit hours in one or more of the following subjects: English, journalism, public relations, writing or other similar and related areas of study and two years of experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related experience in publicity or promotional work for the required experience. 

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in public affairs specialist classification or public affairs specialty codes in the information and arts field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in the field of disabilities. Outreach experience to an audience of people with varied types of disabilities.
  • Experience presenting in both large and small groups.
  • Experience as an ambassador for a program, company, or product.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

The incumbent will be assigned outreach events in the central Maryland region, and will be responsible for travel arrangements to the events.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates will be subject to a background investigation to include credit and criminal history. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
