Introduction

As the historical agency for Maryland, the State Archives is the central depository for government records of permanent value. Records date from the founding of the Maryland Colony in 1634 to the present day. The State Archives identifies, appraises, acquires, describes, preserves, and makes physically and electronically available (in a secure and dynamic environment) the permanent records of Maryland's past, while providing reliable current information to citizens and public officials for the better administration of Maryland government and understanding of Maryland history. The Archives describes Maryland state, county, and municipal government agencies, and their origin, functions, structure, personnel, historical evolution, reports, and other aspects of Maryland and its history; and encourages the study of Maryland government history. The agency also serves as the custodian of the state's fine art collections.

Main Purpose of Job

This position provides conservation treatment to paper and book archival records, facilitates public access to materials and gives preservation advice.

POSITION DUTIES

Performs conservation treatments on paper records. Treatments include surface cleaning, washing in de-ionized water, deacidification, mending, flattening, lining, tape removal, chemical treatments, book conservation, before and after treatment photos, and preservation. Prepares fragile paper records for scanning.

Writes treatment proposals and collection/object assessments. Enters conservation treatment information into electronic databases and keeps these databases accurate and up-to-date. When assigned, takes still photographs examples of conservation treatment before and after treatment. Writes reports and recommendations to collection managers as assigned. Tracks assignments and workflow.

Assists Specials Collections, Artistic Properties and other collections and records managers with appropriate, acid-free re-housing of objects and documents for long-term storage. Providing internal and external customers with assistance in framing, de-framing, exhibition labels, and mounting documents/objects for display.

Assists archives departments with preservation training and outreach, including: providing training sessions in proper handling, storage, and treatment of paper documents, photographic materials, and books; representing the Archives before government groups, community organizations, schools classes, genealogical and historical societies, and professional archival organizations.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six years of experience in professional archival work with public records.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional archival experience for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute academic credit from an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year for the required experience.

3.  Candidates may substitute two years of experience in the Archival Assistant series classification for required education and up to four years of the required experience.   

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Six years of total experience in providing hands-on conservation treatment of paper and book collections and experience with records preservation techniques.

 - Experience performing collections care and preservation work including but not limited to: 1) stabilizing paper documents, books, and photographs; 2) rehousing or fabricating collection enclosures; 3) environmental monitoring; 4) mitigating records that have been exposed to mold and/or cultural heritage emergency response; 5) framing/deframing; and 6) experience training others in preservation handling.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

NOT APPLICABLE.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds when record shipments arrive and climb ladders.  Employees in this classification must exercise caution during the retrieval and replacement of heavy volumes from library shelves, particularly when using library ladders.  Employees may work a rotating shift and may be required to work Saturdays.
