LOCATION OF POSITION

There are multiple vacancies located at Maryland State Police (MSP) Barracks across the State of Maryland.  Please select only the county/counties (locations) for which you are willing to accept employment. 

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the MSP Emergency Dispatcher Trainee is to facilitate officer safety by monitoring police radio transmissions and utilizing all communications equipment towards that end at the entry level performance.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor and communicate with MSP and other public safety personnel via two-way multi-channel radios and maintain required documentation of same;
  • Utilize METERS/NCIC/NLETS to obtain, update, disseminate and accurately transmit information within the Department and to other law enforcement and criminal justice agencies;
  • Utilize telephones in a professional manner to provide necessary guidance and information to Departmental personnel and the general public;
  • File and maintain METERS/NLETS messages, and various required logs associated with the communications center operations;
  • Interact with Department personnel, allied agencies and the general public;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s).  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualification(s). 

  1. One year of dispatching experience in a 911 (police/emergency) services environment utilizing a CAD (computer aided dispatch) system.
  2.  One year of experience in a multi-faceted work environment using data entry keyboard functions and a multi-line telephone system.
  3.  A combination of one year of emergency dispatch training, education and/or experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

NOT APPLICABLE.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. In accordance with Section 2-204(b)(6) of the Public Safety Article, candidates for position in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening and a complete criminal background investigation to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.


2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.


3. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the employing barrack with a telephone number where they can be reached.


4. Candidates for this classification may be given a medical examination to determine their ability to perform the duties of the job classification.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED or QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees. The list will be valid for one year.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position.
