Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for conducting WHS Wildlife Response activities in Frederick and Washington counties. The position’s purpose is to be responsive to the public’s need for resolution of wildlife problems, assess wildlife population status via monitoring surveys and assist with research projects. This position must also maintain annual training requirements and awareness of policy updates/changes in order to improve the public’s understanding of wildlife conservation issues via outreach efforts.

Of particular importance is the response to bear emergencies and the resolution of bear complaints as part of the Black Bear Response Team and/or the Wildlife Emergency Response staff.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking interested candidates for a Natural Resources Technician position in our Wildlife Response program. This position is based out of the Wildlife and Heritage Service Indian Springs Work Center located in Clear Spring, MD. The primary function of this position is to conduct WHS Wildlife Response activities in Frederick and Washington counties. The position’s purpose is to be responsive to the public’s need for resolution of wildlife problems, assess wildlife population status via monitoring surveys and assist with research projects. Of particular importance is the response to bear emergencies and the resolution of bear complaints both during normal business hours and after hours as part of the Wildlife Emergency Response staff. This position also provides as-needed support to the Land Management program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Seven years of experience, five years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and five years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years of experience in responding to and handling wildlife complaints and emergencies.
  • At least three years of experience using firearms and chemical immobilization equipment in a professional setting.
  • At least three years of experience providing technical support to the public regarding wildlife conflict resolution in a professional setting in-person and over the phone.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
