Introduction

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) leads the State in the creation and implementation of information technology solutions that improve IT infrastructure and government services and keep Maryland current within IT industry trends.  The individual will work closely with technical architects, infrastructure and operations teams and other cross-department teams to evaluate business needs and provide end-to-end technical solutions and manage, operate, monitor, audit, secure server Virtualization assets.

POSITION DUTIES

The Senior Virtualization Engineer will support all aspects of VMware virtualization; configuration, implementation, management of servers in virtualized environments, and VDI implementations. The candidate also should have a foundation in Windows and network management skills.

This position will be responsible for all technological duties associated with day-to-day operations of datacenter and Server management, with a focus on implementation, migration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all in-scope infrastructure systems. The employee will oversee the design and hands-on implementation in building virtual and physical environments, with experience in SLA management, Disaster Recovery, Identity, and Access Management, Security and Compliance, Active Directory, and leading technology refresh projects. 

The employee will be responsible for equipment maintenance tasks such as managing and installing custom upgrades for supporting infrastructure; replacing cables, components, and accessories; maintaining records and drawing schematics of the DC; planning for capacity changes and ensuring compliance with State and Local regulations.

Oversee the implementation, maintenance, upgrade, and administration of virtual and physical environments, including network infrastructure, servers, storage, and peripherals to achieve availability, performance, and security objectives.

Provide technical guidance on infrastructure and virtual networking projects, connectivity and traffic management including WAF, firewalls, routing, and NAT.

Capture and integrate essential system capabilities or business functions required for partial or full system restoration after a catastrophic failure event.

Responsible for supporting migrations, move agencies into DoIT’s enterprise support, using native orchestration tools and technologies.

Responsible for leading and supporting network design changes/enhancements for improved system availability and performance.

Identifying the customer requirements, analyzing alternatives, and conduct product recommendations related to the platform, software, and network configurations.

Maintain a disaster recovery plan for IT operations and production systems and coordinate responses to emergency production issues; resolve conflicting demands from users for service.

Ensures that platforms are efficiently utilized, the cost to operate and support the platforms aligns with business expectations, and that all regulatory and compliance requirements are met for all supported gears (to include, but not limited to state security and compliance regulations, etc.).

Triage, prioritize, and troubleshoot ServiceNow ticket backlog assigned to the backup team based on technical difficulty and operational risk.

Installing and upgrading the Oracle server and application tools; leading the mitigation of common vulnerabilities and exposures for Ubuntu Linux as well as driving active hardening in the kernel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Six years of experience, four years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users and an additional two years of experience planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or a high school equivalency certificate and completion of a certification program in Network Administration, such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Juniper Networks Certification Program (JNCP) or equivalent certification program for the additional two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis: in planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices for graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer information technology, management information systems, or other information technology related field, to include course work in local or wide area computer networks, from an accredited college or university and four years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Candidates substituting military experience should be honorably discharged.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following skillsets or experience: 

Two (2) years of experience administering, troubleshooting, and upgrading Cisco UCS platforms. 

Two (2) years of experience in maintaining and troubleshooting enterprise-grade storage platforms to include converged and hyperconverged architectures.

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached. Employees may be furnished with a pager or cell phone.

Employees may occasionally be required to travel to field locations and must have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.
