The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) provides support to state agencies, the Executive Office of the Governor, the Governor’s coordinating offices, and a variety of independent agencies within the Executive Branch.

POSITION DUTIES

A Department of Information Technology (DoIT) Systems Architect is an advanced technical engineer who ensures that the appropriate technology and methodologies are applied when translating business requirements into technical and functional solutions. This role will contribute to the development and execution of the platform solutions strategy, ensuring that it is aligned with the enterprise technology needs. Employees will implement strategies to enable meeting goals and expectations; gather information, frame problems, devise/execute plans, track progress, adjust plans and demonstrate outcomes. An infrastructure architect works with business leaders to determine the outcomes that a technical project or system should deliver, then they design, build, and deploy it as part of a larger project.

Employees in this position will provide technical guidance to infrastructure engineers on projects of medium to high complexity. Employees in this position have advanced knowledge related to hosting environments, wide area and local networks, identity & access management platforms, IDS/IPS, and all other components of an enterprise data network. Employees will guide in execution of Incident, Change, Release, Problem, Performance, and Availability Management.

This position may be subject to an on-call 24 hours a day and may be required to travel to field locations and have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided.

  • Design the physical spaces for the virtual environments that the state uses to store and manage their data. This includes the layout of servers, storage networks, racks, and other resources. This includes being actively involved in designing, implementing, and managing the physical and logical infrastructure of a data center. 
  • Work as a technical expert on critical engagements involving architecting infrastructure solutions, providing hands-on expertise, implementing core service delivery and project management. Work closely with product owners and technology partners to understand existing systems and support them. 
  • Assesses industry standards for models, and where appropriate, incorporates them into client solutions. Responsible for coordinating with architecture peers and information security teams to ensure that quality, efficiency, agility, and security goals are achieved. 
  • Maintain and implement a disaster recovery plan for IT operations and production systems and coordinate responses to emergency production issues; resolve conflicting demands from users for service. 
  • Develops conceptual designs and prototypes. Partners and negotiate with strategic vendors in the realization of platform solutions strategy. Conduct research on emerging technologies in support of systems development efforts and recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and systems flexibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Six years of experience, five or more years of experience performing network design and development of an enterprise data network in an organization with extensive level of program integration and reliance on technology and an additional one year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining application, communication, database or operating systems software.

Note:

1. Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Management Information Systems or other information technology-related field to include coursework in application, communication, database or operating systems software technology for the additional one year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining application, communication, database or operating systems software.

2. Candidates may substitute experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output to process data on computer systems; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis for high school education.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or related field from an accredited college or university and five or more years of experience performing network design and development of an enterprise data network in an organization with extensive level of program integration and reliance on technology for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or related field from an accredited college or university and three years of experience performing network design and development of an enterprise data network in an organization with extensive level of program integration and reliance on technology for the required experience.

5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Computer Systems Operations classifications or Computer Systems Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  1. Experience with multi-vendor environments (Cisco, Juniper, VMware, Microsoft, etc.) is preferred. 
  2. Experience with network automation and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ansible) is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached. Employees may be furnished with a pager or cell phone.

Employees may occasionally be required to travel to field locations and must have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.
