Introduction
The Maryland State Retirement Agency (the
"Agency") is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (the "System"). The System is a multi-employer, public employees'
defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement
and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately
245,000 active members and more than 160,000 retirees and beneficiaries.
The
Agency's Investment team is both results driven and creative problem solvers
who work
together to manage a global multi-asset portfolio and to
provide a secure base of assets to pay the current and future benefits for the
underlying retirees and beneficiaries. The Investment Division is committed to providing an interesting and challenging work environment that will give the investment team a complete understanding

The Agency is seeking an exceptional individual who is a
creative problem solver, who is also well organized, detail-oriented, values
learning, and is a self-starter to serve as an Investment Associate within its
Investment Division. The successful
candidate will be proficient with standard office software and comfortable
learning new systems. This position will work in a collaborative environment supporting private market investment teams responsible for Private Equity;
Private Real Assets including Real Estate; and Absolute Return.
The Investment Associate will initially report
to a Senior Portfolio Manager
in private markets.

POSITION DUTIES
Responsibilities
include but are not limited to:
- Provide analytical support to the investment teams to assist with the due diligence process for investing with new managers and products.
- Provide analytical support to the investment teams to assist with the ongoing evaluation and monitoring of existing investments.
- Assist with the workflow around capital calls and distributions as well as monthly and quarterly performance reporting from external managers.
- Ensure that all investment activity is accurately reflected in the internal systems and is reconciled with the custodian.
- Effectively utilize existing systems to monitor and report on investments and to track workflow. Look for opportunities to improve the Agency’s utilization of existing systems and opportunities to further automate reporting and monitoring of investments.
- Help with the coordination of activity between investment staff and the operations and legal functions.
- Engage in primary research to identify new opportunities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduated from
an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree before
starting the position.
Applicants can
substitute a minimum of three years of relevant experience in private market
investments for the required education qualification.
Other: Must have interest in and knowledge of private market investing.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate should have some of the experiences listed
below to achieve success with the position’s
responsibilities. It is desirable that this individual has knowledge and experience with:
· Academic background in Information Systems, Computer Science/Programming, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or other related disciplines.
· Desirable software skills: Python, Microsoft Excel plus VBA, Access
· Strong
financial modeling skills with a focus on modeling private investments
