As part of the Maryland State Department of Education, the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) provides services to assist students with disabilities prepare for the work world, vocational rehabilitation services to assist adults with significant disabilities who are seeking to enter or reenter the workforce, and the adjudication of Social Security disability claims for the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

This important position plans, implements, and coordinates rehabilitation and employment services for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing being served at the Workforce Technology Center (WTC), and provides services within regional offices throughout the State of Maryland. This position also works in partnership with the regional Rehabilitation Counselors for the Deaf and the local business community to develop job opportunities, provide job placement and on-the-job supports to promote worksite integration, and assists consumers in obtaining and maintaining employment.

Position duties include: 

  • Placing individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing into employment and providing support services.
  • Performing job development and job placement activities for DORS consumers who have graduated from WTC Training Programs and support employment services to other regions. 
  • Providing job-seeking skills training. 
  • Consulting on job readiness and placement issues and labor market trends, communication, and cultural information as it relates to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. 
  • Handling ADA and accommodation issues for DORS staff and consumers. 
  • Interfacing with businesses throughout the state to develop employment, internship and on-the-job training opportunities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: (Both levels) Possession of a bachelor's degree

Experience: Level I - None 

Level II - Two years of professional experience in a behavioral or social science-related field or one year of professional experience as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist I providing rehabilitation counseling or vocational evaluation services to clients with physical or behavioral disabilities, or teaching services to clients with partial or total visual impairment. 

Note: (II) A master's degree and one year of experience in a behavioral or social science-related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must consent to State Police Investigation (fingerprinting) as a routine procedure for all employees with this Agency.
