Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government.  The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Main Purpose of Job

Office of the Attorney General  is seeking a Litigation Assistant (Administrative Officer II) to join its newly established Federal Litigation Unit within the Civil Litigation Division. In preparation for potential actions by the federal government that could threaten the health and well-being of Maryland residents, this unit will play a pivotal role in protecting Marylanders’ rights and defending against federal overreach. As part of this team, the Litigation Assistant will assist litigators lead and participate in critical federal and multistate litigation efforts, from opposing federal regulatory rollbacks to defending civil rights and ensuring election integrity. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to protecting civil rights, defending environmental laws, and ensuring the rule of law in Maryland.




POSITION DUTIES

Key Responsibilities:

Assist attorneys in preparing legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and briefs.
Perform detailed legal research and maintain case files.
Independently handle discovery processes, including drafting subpoenas and organizing discovery materials, including exhibit preparation.
Coordinate with other states’ legal teams on multistate litigation efforts.
Assist with trial preparation, document management, and the filing of court documents.
Provide administrative support, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   An associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Experience: Seven years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant, or in administrative or professional work.

Candidates must be detail-oriented, have excellent organizational and writing skills, be able to use independent judgment, and have the ability to work at a consistently high pace.

Notes: Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and strong word processing skills.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess:

1. Experience performing legal research and preparing legal documents, verifying legal citations and references.
2. Experience managing case files, schedules, and logs.
3. Familiarity with the Maryland Rules of Procedure, Annotated Code of Maryland. 
4. Knowledge of Maryland and Federal court rules and procedures.
