Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government.  The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Main Purpose of Job

The Office of the Attorney General at the Department of Labor is seeking a Paralegal II. This role supports Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) in their work across various divisions, boards, and commissions. 

Key job responsibilities include: assisting with debt collection for Maryland’s Family and Medical Leave Program, supporting the Division of Labor and Industry with case tracking, public information requests, discovery responses, legal research, document drafting, and exhibit preparation. Additional duties involve drafting agreements, providing administrative support, managing the law library, redacting documents, and handling electronic and hard copy case filings. The paralegal will also review complaints, prepare charge letters, and update the Legal Files Case Tracking System based on case files from the Office of Occupational and Professional Licensing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Experience: Five years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant, or in administrative or professional work.

Applicants should have experience performing legal research and preparing legal documents, verifying legal citations and references; experience managing case files, schedules, and logs; and familiarity with the Maryland Rules of Procedure, Annotated Code of Maryland.  

Applicants should be detail-oriented, have excellent organizational and writing skills, be able to use independent judgment, and have the ability to work at a consistently high pace.

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 



SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

 Applicants must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and strong word processing skills. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of Maryland and Federal court rules and procedures.
