The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to attend to the religious needs of the incarcerated individual population as a means of facilitating their adjustment to confinement within the Jessup Correctional Institution.

  • Plans, develops, monitors and maintains a program of worship activities, study groups, administration of sacraments, holy day observances and special programs in order to accommodate incarcerated individuals spiritual needs in accordance with relevant agency directives.
  • Meets with incarcerated individuals in order to provide assistance and guidance by circulating in housing units, setting up visitation schedule in housing areas and responding to inmate request slips.
  • Develop religious programs to enable inmates to practice their particular chosen religion by responding to requests of incarcerated individuals in accordance with agency policies.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

 1. Bachelor's degree in the disciplines of Theology, Religious Studies, or Sacred Studies from an accredited institute.

2. Two years of ministerial experience working under a correctional setting (or similar setting) with various religious groups.

Chaplains must possess current endorsement from a recognized denominational authority. The applicant’s relationship to the endorsing body must reflect a minimum two-year association before endorsement.

SELECTION PROCESS

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position. It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Please report all experience and education that is related to this position.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
