Introduction

The Attorney General is the Chief Legal Officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government.  The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Main Purpose of Job

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for the Chief Investigator of the Consumer Protection Division. The Consumer Protection Division protects and provides relief to Maryland consumers by enforcing the Maryland Consumer Protection Act and related statutes. 

The Consumer Protection Division investigates and brings actions against unfair, abusive and deceptive trade practices that harm Maryland consumers. This position is an opportunity to protect Maryland’s most vulnerable residents from deceptive practices and to help people who have been victimized by those practices.

POSITION DUTIES

The Chief Investigator will supervise an experienced team of investigators and will conduct investigations, including interviewing witnesses, reviewing documents, analyzing data, providing litigation support, testifying in enforcement proceedings, monitoring settlements and overseeing the distribution of restitution to consumers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:  Seven years of relevant experience, such as work as an investigator, paralegal, auditor, fraud examiner, or data analyst as well as experience conducting complex investigations.

The candidate needs to be a self-starter, have a strong work ethic, and possess excellent writing, analytical, and investigative skills.

Note: Additional graduate education may be substituted for up to two years of experience.  

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with database and spreadsheet software is essential.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

Supervisory experience;
Experience conducting complex document review or data analysis.
