Main Purpose of Job

This role involves assisting the Director and Deputy Director of the Air and Radiation Administration (ARA) in overseeing program operations; regulatory decision-making; and environmental, legislative, and science policy development and implementation. 

The person in this role will represent ARA both internally and externally on policy matters and will collaborate with State, federal, and multi-state organizations to advance ARA and MDE goals. They will also participate in boards and commissions as needed. In addition, the individual will be responsible for leading ARA in reviewing and responding to State legislation affecting air quality, radiation, and climate change. 

The selected candidate will act as a liaison to the Office of the Secretary and the Attorney General’s Office for the review of regulations, legal documents, litigation, and actions related to federal laws affecting ARA. The responsibilities also include community engagement and the development of policies related to environmental justice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university that includes 30 credits in the biological, environmental, physical sciences, other appropriate technical discipline, or possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Law or Environmental Public Policy or other appropriate related degree.

 

EXPERIENCE: Five (5)  years of experience supervising professional staff in an environmental field or experience as an environmental project manager including assigning tasks, setting priorities, and reviewing work products.

 

NOTES:

(1) Professional or scientific experience related to natural resources, environment or public health may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for education.

(2) One additional year of experience in professional scientific, natural resources, or environmental or public health may be substituted for the 30 specialized academic credits.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

  • Experience developing or reviewing proposed State or federal legislation
  • Experience managing projects or workgroups within State government.
  • Experience with federal policies, regulations, or legislation that intersect with MDE.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).

ANNUAL LEAVE - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year.

SICK LEAVE – fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year.

PARENTAL LEAVE – up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

HOLIDAYS – State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year.
