Main Purpose of Job

The mission of the Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control (The Center) is improving Maryland's health by preventing and controlling chronic disease. The Center has a broad portfolio of chronic disease related projects, most notably diabetes and heart disease prevention and management, as well as healthy lifestyles promotion, food security, and cognitive health. The Director of the Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control provides experienced public health leadership in promoting the work of the Center, performing highly responsible programmatic and administrative work at the level of a program manager with extensive training and expertise in public health. The Director ensures accountability and integrity of all fiscal matters, personnel actions, and procurement activities of the Center, and provides expert leadership to the Center's 20 program staff. The Center Director is responsible for the coordination and implementation of multiple high-profile and high priority programs and grants within the Center. The Director interfaces on a daily basis with the Cancer and Chronic Disease Bureau Director and Deputy Director; and frequently with PHPA leadership and the Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services. The position provides strategic planning for the Center and all activities as well as coordinates chronic disease activities across PHPA and MDH. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health or a related field, at least 6 years of profession experience with prevention and health promotion, including at least 4 years of experience managing chronic disease or related public health programs and at least 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates should possess the following:

  • At least 3 years experience in federal grant management, including grant writing and budget management and development; 
  • Experience overseeing and directing councils, coalitions, workgroups, and/or other partner engagement groups; and,
  • Experience leading or contributing to strategic planning initiatives, preferably public health-related or similar.
