Introduction

The Maryland Office of People's Counsel (OPC) seeks well-organized, customer service oriented applicants with good time management skills to join our mission-driven team as an Administrative Assistant. In this role, this position will work directly with our team of attorneys to support OPC’s work to advocate for the economic interests of the State's residential consumers of public utility services such as electricity and natural gas, considering the State’s climate and environmental policies. Main Purpose of Job

Serve as a legal Administrative Assistant to seven to eight Assistant People’s Counsels and two Deputy People’s Counsels, as needed. Provide administrative support to the People’s Counsel, the Director of Consumer Assistance, and the Chief Operating Officer, as needed. This position has responsibility to support the operations of a hybrid telework office as a member of the “Administrative Team” that ensures coverage of critical in-office functions on a scheduled basis. This position requires the incumbent to provide excellent internal and external customer service, in support of OPC’s mission to work on behalf of Maryland’s residential customers to advocate for utility performance at the lowest reasonable cost, consistent with State environmental and economic policies, through effective advocacy, education, and creative problem-solving.

POSITION DUTIES

The position provides litigation support for OPC’s team of attorneys, with responsibilities that include creating and maintaining electronic case folders; preparing administrative letters and other correspondence; finalizing briefs and expert testimony for submission to the Public Service Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the courts; and preparing printed materials required by attorneys for hearings and presentations. This position supports the operations of a hybrid telework office as a member of the “Administrative Team” that ensures coverage of critical in-office functions on a scheduled basis, including greeting and directing office visitors, and logging incoming mail and packages.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. 

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience. 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application (including the supplemental questions) regarding your qualifications.

Proficiency with Google Suite applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
Proficiency with Adobe Pro software and knowledge of how to create and edit PDF documents.
Experience working in a law office or court system, working with attorneys or courtroom personnel.
Experience with supporting deadline-driven work and the ability to work quickly under time constraints.
Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.Ability to work collaboratively and as a team player.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
