Introduction

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for an internship with Land Acquisition and Planning. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in applying GIS to support natural resource conservation and public recreation.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to support the work of the Land Acquisition and Planning unit by developing GIS tools, including ArcGIS Online web applications, a geodatabase, and automation of data updates. There will be flexibility for the intern to choose tasks based on education and professional goals.

Sample tasks include: 
  • Design and document geodatabase for storing information on grants for land acquisition and recreation development 
  • Create web applications for viewing and collecting data 
  • Digitize historical maps to improve record-keeping 
  • Create automations for data updates 
  • Network analysis of project sites 
  • Write metadata and other documentation 
  • Occasional field work, if desired, to test GIS tools and collect data 

The internship runs 11 weeks between the end of August and the end of December. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit. 

Experience with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro or Desktop is required. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred fields of study: Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

The selected candidate may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. If assigned such duties, you will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on your current driving record.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
