Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks an experienced, zealous, and dedicated attorney to serve as an Assistant Public Defender III in the MOPD’s Appellate Division. POSITION DUTIES
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
The attorney in this position is responsible for ensuring zealous representation of indigent defendants in appellate matters. The successful candidate will combine their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with their strong research, writing, and litigation skills to provide exceptional representation in appellate proceedings. Appellate Defenders are expected to work independently in managing active caseloads while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. This position requires travel throughout the state of Maryland. However, the office is located in Baltimore, Maryland.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Passionate and zealous
representation of clients in appellate proceedings including, but not limited
to conducting extensive legal research, writing persuasive legal briefs
and certiorari petitions, and presenting oral arguments.
● Ability to manage an active
hearing schedule and heavy caseload competently and resourcefully.
● Effectively and compassionately communicate with
incarcerated clients, their families, trial attorneys, court staff, and
opposing counsel.

Ensure clients are consistently heard and
respected.
● Work
collaboratively with other OPD employees to advance our clients’ interests.
● Continuously seek personal development through
training, continuing legal education, trial skills course, and keeping apprised
of new and relevant case law.
●
Mentor newer or more junior attorneys in the
Appellate Division.
● Provide
advice and guidance to attorneys in other OPD districts and divisions.
● Other
duties as assigned by the State Public Defender.

caseload.
● Active
membership in good standing with the State of Maryland Bar or Bar of another
state. If selected, offers will be extended contingent on membership to the bar
in advance of the start date. Preference in the selection process will be given
to candidates who are already a member of the bar. Attorneys barred in another
state must become members of the Maryland bar within 18 months of the start
date.

minimum of five years’ experience in criminal or parental defense.
