Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor - Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning is accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position of Adult Basic Education Teacher.  This is a professional position responsible for providing teaching and learning to residents of an adult maximum correctional facility.  This is an agency-specific recruitment for this specific classification and function only with the MD Department of Labor.

This position could be placed in any classification within the Teacher Series. Salary and exact classification will be determined following an assessment of the selected candidate's education and MSDE Certification using the IEPP Salary Scale.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose is to teach one or more subjects to adult learners in a facility operated by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS). Work will involve providing academic instruction to incarcerated adults. An ABE teacher is to provide instruction in basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and life skills to incarcerated adult learners, helping them improve their literacy, achieve educational goals, and enhance their employability and life skills. Employees in these classifications receive general supervision from a principal or other designated educational administrator.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide academic instruction in a variety of methods including whole group, small group, and individualized instruction consistent with the approved curriculum, which results in their progress toward successful completion of the requirements for the Adult Skills Certificates and/or a Maryland High School diploma.
  • Plan and organize time in advance to provide effective instruction.
  • Use information informal and formal assessment tools to provide a reliable and valid appraisal of student skills and achievement.
  • Maintain and submit program and instructional records in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Create a physical interpersonal climate that is conducive to learning.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Candidates should have knowledge of the principles and practices of adult education; knowledge of instructional planning and teaching methods; skill in the use of assessment instrument; ability to develop appropriate educational goals and objectives; ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education  Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience using instructional and classroom management skills.
2. Experience teaching adult learning principles; and basic education subjects (Reading, Writing, Math) and knowledge of special education. 
3. Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals from various cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. 
4. Use of technology such as tables, projectors, computers, etc. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Education Article, Section 6-101 of the Annotated Code and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.12.01.03B(2). Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (LABOR/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to LABOR/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
