POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is seeking a dedicated and vigilant Driver and Special Assistant to join our team. This position involves driving the Superintendent to various appointments and events, maintaining a safe and secure environment in public settings, and assisting with administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in driving and security, excellent situational awareness, and the ability to make quick, sound decisions to ensure the Superintendent's safety. This position requires frequent travel throughout the state and occasional evening and weekend work may be required based on the Superintendent’s schedule. Candidates may be subject to a background check and driving record verification.

Responsibilities Include: 
  • Safely transport the Superintendent to appointments and events throughout the state. 
  • Navigate traffic efficiently, ensuring timely arrival at destinations, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations. 
  • Monitor surroundings and assess potential security risks during public appearances and travel. 
  • Make real-time decisions to remove the Superintendent from potentially unsafe situations. 
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and security personnel as necessary. 
  • Assist with scheduling appointments and meetings. 
  • Print and prepare documents for the Superintendent’s meetings. 
  • Greet visitors and manage incoming phone calls. 
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed to support the Superintendent’s office operations. 
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  Three years of professional driving and/or security experience and a clean driving record.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must consent to a State Police Investigation (fingerprinting) as a routine procedure for all employees with this Agency.
  • Employees in this classification may be subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
