Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government.  The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Main Purpose of Job

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for a Management Associate in the Courts/Civil Litigation Division. Responsibilities for this position include, assisting with litigation and appellate matters; typing pleadings, motions, memoranda of law, and appellate briefs; keeping current all litigation files; organizing exhibits and other documents in preparation for trial, hearings, meetings or other purposes; and preparing mail for distribution and tracking. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. 

Experience: Five years performing secretarial or clerical work involving typing duties. 


Candidates may substitute:

Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience. 

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration or Personnel Specialist classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Special Assistant or Secretarial fields of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

1. Knowledge of Microsoft Word.

2. Legal secretarial work experience.

3. Familiarity with internet legal research databases. 




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a typewriter or keyboard on a personal computer, computer terminal or word processor at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list for at least one year.  Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.
