Introduction

Maryland Public Television, commonly known as MPT, is a public television network that broadcasts throughout the entire state of Maryland and the District of Columbia and into parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is Maryland's only statewide broadcaster. Headquartered in Owings Mills, MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and is a producer of both locally and nationally distributed TV programs and digital content.

Main Purpose of Job

Working under the supervision of the Chief Engineer for the Transmission & Distribution Engineering Unit, based out of Owings Mills, MD, the Transmitter Maintenance Engineer will ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of all facilities and equipment related to the distribution and transmission of MPT's broadcast signals, including: high power UHF DTV transmitters and related broadcast equipment; 480V 3-phase power; HVAC systems; diesel generators; and CCTV camera systems. In support of this, frequent travel to MPT's seven transmitter/tower sites and related microwave sites, distributed across the state of Maryland, is required.

POSITION DUTIES

Maintain On-Air Operations: Utilize technical skills to troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate broadcast
equipment, minimizing downtime and ensuring seamless broadcasting.
Electronics Repair: Demonstrate proficiency in reading schematics, troubleshooting, and repairing circuit
boards down to the component level.
Equipment Installation: Install, test, and configure broadcast systems, including component integration
and wiring within equipment racks.
Preventive Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance and cleaning to ensure equipment compliance
with MPT and FCC regulations.
Network Configuration: Configure and troubleshoot microwave, fiber-optic, and TCP/IP networks, as
well as Windows and Linux-based systems and software.
Effective Communication: Interact professionally and efficiently with contractors, vendors, tower
tenants, equipment manufacturers, and MPT staff.
Facility Upkeep: Contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of MPT tower sites, including building,
facility, janitorial, and grounds-keeping tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of related course
work and experience, and at least two years of experience in a television broadcast environment or
related field. Note: Experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education
only. For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as
determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator License or Society of
Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license, valid in
the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Transmitter Maintenance Engineer must maintain 24/7 on-call availability status and may be required to
work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work may occur outdoors in
unfavorable weather conditions. Applicant should be able to lift equipment up to, but no more than, 50
lbs. Applicant must be able to climb ladders to work on transmission line, lighting, building rooftop
equipment, and to install equipment in 7-foot racks.
