The successful candidate will possess the core competencies, skills, and passion to effectively advise the Deputy Chief of Staff on a variety of policy issues while also supporting the general workflow of a portfolio of agencies.

POSITION DUTIES

General Purpose: The Policy Advisor is responsible for supporting the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) on policy issues through project management, research, and writing – all of which enable the Deputy Chief of Staff to effectively oversee a portfolio of agencies and workstreams.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide the DCOS with advice, recommendations, and consultation on various policy issues  
  • Serve as a thought partner to the DCOS on emergent projects and policy issues  
  • Manage multiple large-scale efforts and projects on varied timelines  
  • Coordinate with others in the Governor’s Office to ensure DCOS alignment with Governor’s priorities  
  • Manage internal and external inquiries by assisting by handling, delegating, or escalating for DCOS attention  
  • Assign, follow-up on, and/or delegate action items from meetings or other interactions as necessary  
  • Support DCOS priorities by providing high-level input on scheduling  
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have demonstrated many or preferably all of the following:
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of multiple policy areas.  
  • Experience project managing large workstreams over extended periods of time  
  • Experience managing multiple projects and work priorities  
  • Experience delegating tasks  
  • Experience simplifying information and concepts to formulate options and recommendations  
  • Ability to work both independently and with groups/stakeholders.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • A track record of demonstrating and successfully applying the following characteristics:
    • Communicating with colleagues at all levels to achieve objectives  
    • Listening effectively, while also probing, surfacing, and sharing ideas  
    • Comfortable with incomplete information and/or unknowns  
    • Resourceful and highly organized  
    • A “self-starter” motivated by the achievement of the organization, the team, and themselves – in that order  
    • A team player, with the ability to organize, assign, and track completion of work by direct and indirect team members  
    • Flexible and adaptable, even while maintaining a keen focus on objectives  
    • Someone who holds themselves to the highest personal standards of integrity
