Main Purpose of Job

The Student Success Specialist plays a pivotal role in supporting students with disabilities as they transition from high school to post-secondary employment, education, or independent living. This position focuses on developing and implementing disability awareness and employability modules for students, coordinating parent engagement programs, and providing individualized job search assistance for graduating seniors. The goal of the role is to ensure students are equipped with the skills and resources needed to achieve employment or meaningful post-secondary opportunities before graduation.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsibilities:
  • Develop Disability Awareness Modules:
    • Design and deliver interactive, accessible learning modules that focus on self-advocacy, disability rights, and workplace accommodations.
    • Tailor materials to meet the diverse learning needs of high school students with disabilities.
  • Implement Parent Engagement Programs:
    • Coordinate parent groups and workshops to ensure families are informed about the transition process.
    • Provide resources on employment rights, post-secondary options, and independent living supports.
  • Support Job Search for Graduating Seniors:
    • Collaborate with community employers, vocational rehabilitation services, and workforce development agencies to identify job opportunities for students.
    • Assist students in developing résumés, practicing interview skills, and preparing for job applications.
    • Work closely with each student to create individualized transition plans aimed at securing employment or post-secondary education prior to graduation.
  • Coordination and Collaboration:
    • Serve as a liaison between the school, community organizations, and employers to facilitate successful student transitions.
    • Maintain close communication with the Special Education department to ensure transition services are aligned with students' IEPs (Individualized Education Programs).
    • Track and maintain detailed records of student progress and post-graduation outcomes related to transition goals, including employment, further education, and independent living. Additionally, establish and manage an alumni network to stay in contact with former students, gathering data on long-term success and career development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with students with disabilities, especially those transitioning from school to employment.

Knowledge of disability rights, workplace accommodations, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage parents, students, and community stakeholders.

A Maryland driver’s license is required.

Lifting may be required when working with students.

Periods of time standing while mentoring students at worksites.

Fluency in American Sign Language and written English are required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience in secondary transition planning or vocational rehabilitation.

Ability to develop instructional materials and facilitate training for students with varying learning abilities.

Familiarity with local and state employment resources for individuals with disabilities.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
