Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor, (MD Labor), Division of Unemployment Insurance is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of UI Contributions Tax Auditor I. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year after the closing date of the announcement.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary objective of this role is to conduct business audits in Maryland to verify their adherence to the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Law.

POSITION DUTIES

This job is an entry-level position that involves conducting audits and investigations to examine and analyze employers’ payroll and business records. The purpose of these audits is to determine or confirm liability under Unemployment Insurance law, in accordance with federal tax performance standard while adhering to division and federal policies. This role can be performed independently or as part of an audit team and does not involve supervising other positions. The responsibilities of this position include conducting audits of unemployment instances, handling delinquent employer accounts, and performing other duties related to the employer’s liability for unemployment insurance taxes. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 30 credit hours in accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by 3 credit hours in auditing.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Applicants, who had met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974, will be considered to have met the education requirement.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Internal Review classifications or Auditing specialty codes in the Financial or Auditing fields of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Experience preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial reports and statements.

Experience conducting audits and investigations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Personnel employed in this classification will have access to federal tax information and must undergo a state and FBI criminal background check as a condition of employment.

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MD Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MD Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.

1. Employees in this classification are required to travel to multiple locations within their assigned territory.

2. Employees in this classification are provided and required to use a laptop computer.
