Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this full-time contractual position is to perform a variety of laboratory tests, assays, and quality control studies on cannabis and hemp samples collected by the Maryland Cannabis Administration's Office of Laboratory Services. Under the direction of the Office of Laboratory Services' Chemist, this position will prepare cannabis samples for chemistry testing, as well as perform chemistry assays. This position will also perform analytical chemistry techniques and analyses by using automated instrumentation and/or manual procedures to identify and/or quantify microorganisms or contaminants in cannabis samples.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for safely handling and disposing infectious microorganisms, radiochemicals, and hazardous chemicals. Furthermore, this position will be responsible for receiving, processing and storing samples, specimens, and data before and/or after analysis, in accordance with standard operating procedures. Finally, this position will be responsible for monitoring and recording supply inventory, as well as for storing supplies and reagents; verifying the accuracy of incoming deliveries; and checking both the expiration dates and the lot numbers to confirm appropriateness of use. 

This position will require technical laboratory experience, organization, and attention to detail. This position will also require the ability to collaborate with the Scientists within the Maryland Cannabis Administration's Office of Laboratory Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry; Biology; Biotechnology; Chemistry; Genetics; Immunology; Microbiology; Molecular Biology; Medical Technology; Pharmacy; or Zoology, from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications, or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science-related field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing, in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this, or other, State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract, and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. 

You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12-month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
