Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

This position offers a salary range of $50,565 - $73,258, with potential for advancement up to $80,884 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $73,258.

Main Purpose of Job

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking candidates for the position of Management Associate for the Mediation Unit of the Consumer Protection Division, which helps consumers navigate consumer protection issues.  This position is responsible for responding to requests for information from consumers, input, maintenance, and referral of 10,000 to 12,000 complaints annually; all forms of customer contact with the Consumer Protection Division’s Mediation Unit; and assisting in the management of the unit’s daily caseload. The Management Associate assists the Director and Deputy Director with the management of the four administrative staff of the unit and will  supervise the switchboard operator and receptionist.  The person in this position will be an integral part of helping the thousands of consumers who file written complaints and more than 40,000 consumers who call or send email inquiries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years performing secretarial work or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted  at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration or Personnel Specialist classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Special Assistant or Secretarial fields of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have experience with, and proficiency in, Microsoft Word and Excel.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have experience supervising other staff, dealing with the public, and working with volunteers. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a keyboard of a personal computer at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

The State also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services.
