Main Purpose of Job
This position acts as a Natural Resources Biologist at Albert Powell Hatchery (APH) and
Cushwa Fish Hatcheries (CH) to rear and produce several varieties of trout. This position serves
as the Statewide Youth Fishing Rodeo Program Coordinator. This position is responsible for the
egg incubation, fry rearing and independently responsible for daily fish culture rearing
operations of trout as directed by facility manager of the Albert Powell Fish Hatchery. This
position is responsible for assuring the completion of all daily duties at both the Albert Powell
and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries as assigned by the Facility Manager, as it pertains to scheduled
weekly culture activities and independently on assigned weekend duty. Work output produces
trout to support statewide management needs such as put-and-take trout stocking, special
management area trout stocking and youth fishing rodeos. These facilities are a major source to
supply other Fishing and Boating Services hatcheries with juvenile trout. This position functions
as a lead contact person for the public with inquiries, issues and programs related to trout
stocking, regulations, and general fisheries inquiries, Trout in the Classroom program tours,
educational hatchery tours and coordinates the Youth Rodeo Program.
This position has operational administrative and procurement responsibility for the Fishing and
Boating Services at Albert Powell Hatchery and Cushwa Hatchery. Position provides operational
and administrative direction and support to all staff. This position is the inventory point person
for Albert Powell and Cushwa Hatcheries.
This position directly supports the agency’s mission of natural enhancement by providing
recreational fishing opportunities for Maryland’s citizens and visitors and supporting restoration
of coldwater fish populations (DNR goals 1, 3, 5 and 6).
POSITION DUTIES
The position participates at the Albert Powell and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries in the coldwater fish production of
several varieties of salmonid fish species for fish stock enhancement, statewide management needs, put-and-take
trout stocking, special management area trout stocking and youth fishing rodeos. The position participates in
education/outreach, cooperative fish culture projects, and restoration of coldwater fish species for Maryland
waters. The position uses a variety of strategies to raise fish for stocking, including intensive culture, extensive
culture, and integrated fish culture. Other strategies include egg incubation, fry rearing and daily fish culture
rearing of trout as directed by the facility manager of the Albert Powell Fish Hatchery. The position is responsible
for the completion of all daily fish culture activities, maintenance of the facility, fish loading and fish distribution,
by truck, requiring a Commercial Driver’s License, other duties as assigned and includes scheduled weekly and
assigned weekend duty. This position serves as the Statewide Youth Fishing Rodeo Program Coordinator and has
operational administrative and procurement responsibility for the Fishing and Boating Services at the Albert
Powell and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have prior experience at an aquaculture facility.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Position has experience culturing fish eggs, larvae, juvenile and adults in both tank and raceway culture.
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets and database software, preferably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
- Experience with driving a truck, handling/trailering and hauling live fish. Position will need to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
