POSITION DUTIES
- Plans, implements, directs, and evaluates the Howard County WIC program including WIC Nutrition Services, Breastfeeding Peer Education programs, community outreach activities and vendor training/monitoring
- Prepares annual program plans and reports per grant and Maryland Department of Health requirements
- Manages and tracks annual budgets for WIC and the Breast-Feeding Peer Counseling programs of approximately $1.3 million combined.
- Provides continuous assessment of the WIC population’s nutritional needs and recommends or initiates appropriate action
- Provides technical consultation to professional and paraprofessional staff of the WIC program
- Develops local program policies and procedures within the context of federal and state regulations to assure accessibility, quality and efficient program operations
- Maintains knowledge of current regulations affecting program
- Plans and implements orientation and in-service education for professional and paraprofessional staff of the WIC program
- Promotes the use of interagency referral systems and other methods to assure continuity of nutritional care
- Maintains, through subordinate staff, appropriate clinic scheduling
- Ensures referrals to related Health Department programs
- Reviews and approves purchases for the WIC program following local, State and Federal purchasing procedure
- Collaborates with WIC Nutritionist on writing annual Nutrition Education Plan in compliance with Policy and Procedure 5.06 of the MD DHMH WIC Program Policy and Procedure Manual
- Reviews with program nutritionist and CPA the justification for special formulas
- Complies with standards for infection control and risk management
- Participates in site reviews by the State Health Department and implements corrective actions
- Maintains accurate timely records and confidentiality
- Collaborates on special projects in the community to promote healthy childhood nutrition outcomes
- Recruits program staff according to MDH guidelines
- Attends WIC and other relevant training
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice under the licensing requirements for Nutritionists and Dietitians.
Experience: Three years of experience providing professional nutrition or dietetic services, one year of which must include experience in a public health or community setting.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in Community Health, Nutrition or Public Health from an accredited college or university for one year of the required general experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dietitian and Nutritionist classification or Dietitian and Nutritionist specialty codes in the Dietitian field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dietitian or Nutritionist from the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 prior to permanent appointment. A copy of your license or license number should be uploaded on your application.
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
