Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

GRADE

Grade 13

This position offers a salary range of $50,565 - $73,258, with potential for advancement up to $80,884 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $73,258.

Main Purpose of Job

Do you want to join the fight for patient safety and work with a team of Attorney Generals to make a positive impact in the health care field? 

The Health Occupations Prosecution & Litigation Division (HOPL) of the Office of the Attorney General is seeking an Administrative Officer I to provide paralegal and administrative support to attorneys enforcing the practice acts for the health occupations licensing boards. You will be part of a team handling serious allegations involving unprofessional conduct, substance abuse, sexual misconduct, drug diversion, fraud, abuse, and standard of care violations involving nurses and other licensed health care providers. 

POSITION DUTIES

• Assist with employee onboarding, including preparing documentation, conducting orientation, and managing employee records. 
• Prepare and organize office documentation, correspondence, and reports
• Assist attorneys in preparing correspondence, pleadings and other legal documents. 
• Organize and prepare documents for discovery including drafting subpoenas and organizing discovery materials, including exhibit preparation.• Assist with litigation preparation and hearings. 
• Collaborate closely with board staff to coordinate case transfers and manage case dockets. 
• Monitor inventory levels of office supplies and order new supplies as necessary.
• Perform additional office tasks as needed to ensure efficient case management and smooth office operations.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: 
Two years in an administrative role or professional work with experience performing administrative tasks and managing office operations. 

In addition, candidates should have strong communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide consistent work at a high volume with limited instruction.  


Notes: 
Candidates may substitute one year of education or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university for two years of the required experience. 
Candidates may substitute additional education from an accredited law school at the rate of one year of education for two years of the required experience. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have experience using Microsoft Office Suite programs, Google Workspace, and Adobe Pro applications. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of civil litigation processes or the procedures outlined in the Administrative Procedure Act for hearings.
  • Experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.

The State also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services.
