Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Public Art Project Manager within the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC).  

This recruitment is limited to existing Maryland Department of Commerce Employees Only.

The World Trade Center - 401 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202

Main Purpose of Job

This position reports to the Public Art Program Director and is responsible for coordinating and implementing public art projects supported by the state, including those funded through the Maryland Public Art Initiative, as well as occasional special project collaborations with other agencies. 

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of the Public Art Project Manager include: working with other staff in the planning, and administration of public art programs, including professional development and targeted technical support to constituents, capital project managers and state user agency partners to initiate new artwork commission projects; and administering the contract of selected artists through the successful completion and installation of the project; coordinating artist selection committees; planning activities; overseeing overall enhancement of policies and procedures; attending regional and national conferences; writing web and promotional content; assisting with budget projections; and making site visits.

The selected employee will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; have the ability to work independently; handle multiple, concurrent, and high priority projects and be knowledgeable of the trend and practices related to public art.  Experience in managing project timelines, and coordinating scheduled among multiple parties, administration of grants, contracts, and/or public programs and projects required. Proficiency with Google Suite Google Mail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and/or other relevant software.

Some state-wide travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work. 

Notes

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.  
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience. 
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Please ensure that you Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Bachelor's degree in the visual arts, art history, or urban design or arts administration AND three (3) years’ experience in administrative staff or professional work.

2. Experience with a public arts program and or projects. 

3. Ability in organizing public-facing projects. 

4. Work experience with artists, design professionals, fabricators and/or contractors.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
