Introduction


 Maryland Public Television (MPT) is currently seeking a Chief Operating Officer to play a pivotal role at Maryland’s only statewide broadcaster. This position is both dynamic and demanding, requiring a blend of creativity, organizational expertise, and leadership skills. The incumbent will manage day-to-day operations of the television station, guaranteeing that programs meet the expectations of the 1.4 million monthly viewers and students across the State. MPT seeks a person who flourishes in a fast-paced environment and who has a passion for public media.

Main Purpose of Job

Working under the supervision of the President & CEO, you will be at the helm of daily operations, guiding the station to programing, production, distribution and educational service success. Your primary duties will involve overseeing all aspects of television broadcast, from content creation and scheduling to financial management and funding. Further, you’ll have oversite of multiple divisions and regulatory compliance. This multifaceted role requires a keen eye for detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to lead a talented team of professionals in pursuit of delivering top-notch local/national television programming, education services and local state agency advertising campaigns. The incumbent renders senior executive-level decisions not otherwise the purview of the CEO.  

POSITION DUTIES

  • Oversee major operational and administrative functions of Content, Maryland Center for Media Literacy & Education, Production Services & Facilities and the Maryland State Ad Agency divisions
  • Oversee the performance of the national sales team
  • Negotiate contracts with content providers and underwriters
  • Develop and implement station-wide operational policies and procedures
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff members
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders
  • Analyze and interpret market trends for strategic planning; oversee MPT’s strategic planning process
  • Act as a liaison between MPT and national public media organizations
  • Support the CEO in interactions with elected officials, other agency heads, and regulatory bodies
  • Ensure compliance with broadcasting regulations
  • Oversee the development and execution of marketing and branding strategies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, communications, media or related field
  • 10 years of management experience at a media operation, 5 of which were at a senior level
  • 3 years of direct supervisory experience
