Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this classification
exists is to perform clerical legal, and technical work for the Municipal Court
in the issuance and recording of appeal bonds, conditions of release,
forfeitures, subpoenas, summons, surety bonds, warrants, and other legal and
nonlegal documents. The work responsibilities of the classification are: hears
citizen and law enforcement complaints in order to make probable cause
determinations; sets appropriate bail amounts on misdemeanor warrants using
bail schedule approved by the Alabama Supreme Court; approves, processes,
and/or issues legal and nonlegal documents; conducts outstanding alias
warrants, arrest warrants, and summons checks; schedules dates for misdemeanor
or traffic cases; answers telephone and responds to emails. Employees exercise
authority granted by federal, state, and local laws with independence under the
supervision of the Senior Magistrate. Employees may consult other Magistrates,
Senior Magistrate, and/or Court Administrator concerning complex complaints.
Employees work is subject to review for accuracy and conformity with federal,
state and local laws by other Magistrates, Senior Magistrate and/or Court
Administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s
degree in criminal justice or a related field.
NOTE: Qualifying
education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills
and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Must be willing to work rotating shift work,
holidays, weekends, and telecommute. Must be willing to work overtime as needed
to accomplish department objectives. Must,
not later than six months from the date of their appointment, enroll in and
complete the Alabama Municipal Court Clerks and Magistrates Certification
Program in the manner and within the time prescribed by the Alabama
Administrative Office of Courts. Must meet annual continuing education
requirements as prescribed by the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.
