Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform
clerical legal, and technical work for the Municipal Court in the issuance and
recording of appeal bonds, conditions of release, forfeitures, subpoenas,
summons, surety bonds, warrants, and other legal and nonlegal documents. The
work responsibilities of the classification are: supervise personnel involved
in the issuance of arrest warrants and summons; accepting traffic complaints,
customer service, data entry procedures, and processing appeals, bonds, and
releases; process Appeals from Municipal Court to Appellate or Circuit Court;
process remanded Appeals from Appellate or Circuit Court to Municipal Court;
review personnel work for accuracy and conformity with state law, local
ordinance, rules of criminal procedure, and rules of judicial administration;
conduct legal research; manage personnel functions including disciplinary
action, hiring, and performance evaluations; manage schedules, prioritize, and
delegate work to personnel; answer the telephone and respond to complaints or
inquiries concerning court operations, policies and procedures. Employees
exercise authority granted by federal, state, and local laws with independence
and rarely request assistance. Employees work under the supervision of the
Municipal Court Administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field and five (5)
years of experience as a Magistrate, or in law enforcement or in the
legal field, including two (2) or more years of supervisory experience.
Master’s degree in criminal justice or a closely related field may substitute
for the required supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Must be available holidays, nights, and weekends. Must be certified as
a Municipal Court Magistrate.
